Rear view of a couple sitting on beachWe all live in a very busy world, don’t we?

We jump from one task to another to another with no spare time in between.

Many of us don’t enjoy time for ourselves.

If you look at the stats, the number of personal breakdowns is rising. The number of cases of divorce is rising

Why?

Because we don’t have time for ourselves or our other half.

People work and take care of their duties thinking that they don’t need a break. They find that finishing a task is more imperative than giving themselves a moment’s breather. They continue to trudge through life, until one day, they simply collapse and lose control.

I’m all for hard work and determination. Success can only be attained if these two traits are present. But we also need to know when to say that enough is enough.

Our minds need to rest, our bodies need to rest, or else they can fail us when we most need it.

If there’s one way to enjoy life, it’s knowing the importance of rest.

We are all blessed with friends and family. If we don’t give ourselves enough time to spend with them, then we may as well watch all our relationships crumble. No one wants this to happen to them. While many do go on vacations with their loved ones, they also take their work with them. This simply isn’t quality time.

So, how do we actually get to enjoy our spare time? Here are a few ideas:

1. Know that your friends, family and loved ones are just as important as your work.

2. Give yourself time to reflect on your life and work out ways in which you can balance everything.

3. Keep yourself surrounded with friends during your spare time to lessen the chances of thinking about your responsibilities.

4. Learn how to organize your life.

5. Learn to ask for help when you have difficulty sorting something out.

The most important thing to know here is that we’re not alone.

We all have people we can count on, as long as we also know when to help a person in need. Your friends are there to help you. Life just seems less tough when you have someone to lean on.

Remember, as we enjoy our spare time, we need not feel guilty. We simply are enjoying life and we are giving ourselves a chance to recharge and bring back the enthusiasm we have for work.

  1. I’ve found out that giving myself a break from time to time helps me catch up with my profession duties much more quickly and strongly than keep on working like a locomotive!

What you’ve mentioned is very true and I appreciate it.

Great article, and I totally agree. Why spend your whole life chasing a dream of success that usually involves having more leisure time, but which you’re throwing away the leisure time you already have to chase? If you don’t appreciate and savour what you have now, you’ll never attract more of it, right? If you’ve spent every day cramming each minute to the brim to get there, will you know what to do with yourself when you arrive, or will it just feel so weird you start chasing something else?

    Hi Andrew,

On the 1st of April at 9PM this year, I went to the doctor to have my blood tested. I visited her a couple of days before for something innocent and she suggested a blood test, just as a routine.
I wasn’t aware of any health problems and felt better than ever.

She called me back at 5AM and told me I had to rush to the hospital. She already informed them I was coming.
At 7AM I was taken to intensive care as it appeared that I had suffered from a heart attack.

Three days later I had major open heart surgery to have 5 bypassed placed.

    I was devastated!

Everything stopped. Business, family, friends, social contacts, everything.

Fortunately I was right on time and I’ve recovered physically. The mental aspects are quite a different matter, but that’s another discussion.

I don’t have that many relatives and friends, but while I was hospitalized and during my recovery, my family and I could count on them! They took care of everything.

Guess how I spend my spare time now! With them!
It’s good to have a very close network you can count on. :-)

    Regards,
    Case

I know you’ve told me this story off line but it was nice of you to come here and write about it. I just cannot imagine what it was like. Our health is so important and your story is a great reminder that we all have to slow down. Take it easy my friend.

Great tips and topic here Andrew. A little time and solitude to keep the mind sane and happy is a wonderful and unfortunately, rare things for most people. I find my sports of cycling to work and off road unicycling are my best ways to have time to myself and when I don’t do them, I certainly miss them.

  6. Hi Andrew,
It sounds funny to say it, but “fun” really does have to be scheduled in. Otherwise, tasks take over – we never run out of things to do – we get things done and then add more in. My fun is scheduled. It doesn’t always go according to plan. But it carries as much weight as my other “tasks”.

It is true. We seem to forget about taking a breather when we are obtaining success. But you can not obtain adequate success without that breather and time for self and family.

Eban Pagan says that we should take mini breaks (3-5 mins) during the day where we totally disconnect and take 1 or 2 days every week to totally disconnect. He says that these are the times when most of your ideas will come to you. I totally agree!

So, have fun for success, I say!!!
