Mastering public speaking is a skill that is often overlooked when it comes to career management.

The most successful business people and the top entrepreneurs in the world are in the positions they are in because they are great communicators.

No company president can hold the top spot without knowing how to talk to and relate to people.

The same holds true with Team Leaders and Junior and Senior Managers – in fact, anyone who makes regular speeches and presentations.

The best public speakers in the world are those with outstanding communication skills. These people know how to present themselves as authorities in their field, they demand the attention of their audiences and they have the skills to know how to engage the audience and sell their ideas, products and/or services.

They have mastered their public speaking.

If you are currently working in a career and are interested in moving into a better job or interested in climbing the corporate ladder within your company, you will need all the help you can get.

The competition for jobs right now is fierce as many people are looking for work due to layoffs, etc. Employers (many of whom are working under tight budget restraints) are being very careful when hiring these days. They want to be sure that they choose candidates who have a lot to offer.

The candidates who do well in the interviews always get the best jobs.

Taking a course in mastering public speaking could help you in your career.

Learning how to present yourself as an intelligent person who is full of confidence could help to launch you into a new and exciting career.

You can learn how to overcome anxiety and nervousness associated with speaking in front of people.

No employer will hire a timid, shy and quiet job candidate. Instead, they will choose the guy who walks in the room and shows that he is self-confident. He is the one who is relaxed with his body language and who engages with the interviewers.

A course in mastering public speaking will teach you how to make a positive first impression. The best public speaker knows that the first few minutes of his presentation is what often seals the deal.

Dressing for success, telling a short joke or two and getting the audience involved early are all crucial in holding their attention for the duration of your presentation. The more confident you become with public speaking, the more interested people become in what you have to say. You will become more visible at your workplace if you possess good speaking skills. People will seek out your opinions and this will boost your credibility within the organization.

You can easily find comprehensive public speaking courses online.

These courses generally cover the most common issues facing public speakers such as how to conquer those negative thoughts of fearing you may not be liked or that you will appear ‘dumb’.

You will also learn how to involve your audience, hold their attention, as well as how to best present props and other materials without boring the audience.

So take control of your career and start mastering public speaking.

I woke up today to the headlines that the UK’s Prime Minister has allegedly been bullying staff at 10 Downing Street.

At this moment there is no evidence that this actually happened – but a few people are saying it does happen.

Whether it does or not, being managed by a bully Manager is an unpleasant situation to be in.

Check out my post on Alan Sugar by clicking here:

Staff Motivation – Which Works, “Nice-Guy Bosses” or “Intimidators”?

In my corporate career which spanned over 30 years, I have been managed by one bully manager.

And today’s UK headlines brought back all the memories, stress and emotions I went through during that period.

The Manager in question was extremely intimidating. He would shout, swear, bang the desk and tell you to your face you were useless – all in front of others. He was never happy with the work you were doing or had delivered.

I’ve seen him ‘kill’ a few careers and forced people to resign due to his inappropriate behaviour.

When I joined the company that the bully Manager worked for – I was warned.

If you have to go and see Fred (not their real name), make sure you go in the afternoon. He is like a bear with a sore head in the mornings.

You never knew where you stood with him. Sometimes he would totally ignore you or tear your head off. Other times he was your best friend.

How do you cope with situations like that?

I remember once in a team meeting, we had invited one of the junior up and coming members of staff to do a presentation to the Management team.

This was an opportunity for the ‘rising star’ to raise their profile, meet the management and be seen.

He arrived.

The bully Manager (it was his meeting) gave no welcome and just said “I hope you are not going to waste my time”. He was in a bad mood.

Imagine being the young guy who was already nervous, hearing that as his welcome.

Not a good start.

Five minutes into the presentation, the bully Manager screwed up a piece of paper and threw it at the young presenter and told him to ‘get out…I’m bored’.

That’s how he treated people.

He destroyed the young stars confidence in 5 seconds. He knew he was never going to get anywhere within the company and resigned.

There was another time when the bully Manager asked me to do a piece of work which previous Managers had failed to deliver.

No problem…I took it on.

I organized everything…it was being delivered.

Then the bully Manager came along one day and said, “What do you think you are doing?” – in the middle of the office.

“I’m delivering the piece of work you asked me to”

“We stopped that work last week, you idiot”

“Well no-one told me” I retorted

“What do you think I am doing now…I am communicating with you now…I am talking to you, no-one else…words are coming out of my mouth…it’s called communication. Stop the work”

I have removed the swear words!

He turned around and walked off.

Times like that almost made me resign but I didn’t…he wasn’t going to beat me.

Later in the day…he pulled me to one side and said “Sorry”.

He often did that…ridiculed you in public…apologized in private.

The vast majority of staff hated him.

It was a shame he had to be like that – all high and mighty – powerful – because he was a clever man. He had loads of experience but he liked the power of intimidating people.

I don’t think he knew he could get more out of his staff by still being demanding but approachable, pleasant and respectful. He had no respect.

In the end, the company released him and a lot of people were relieved.

This is the time you really need to shine.

Let’s quickly recap how interviews work…

Most interviews follow a similar pattern:

Welcome. Handshake and smile.

Small talk. Being asked about your journey, how easy it was to find us, like a drink?

Being introduced to the interviewers

Being given a brief description of the company and/or job you are applying for

Questions about your experience

Questions about your educational background

Checking out how you see the job, what contribution you can make and how you might go about solving any problems

Questions about you as a person, including your leisure interests

Time for you to ask questions

Finish

So what are the employers looking for during the interview…

1. Will you fit in?

You may look good on paper (i.e. your resume), but will people get on with you and want you in the same office/store/department?

This is where your appearance, way of speaking or your attitude to the work may let you down.

2. Can you do what you say you can do?

For example, some people have a maths certificate and say they can handle money but, when asked to do a simple sum, show they do not have good enough numeracy skills.

You should be told if you will need to take any tests, e.g. typing or shorthand or give a short presentation. This is a common way for an employer to check out your skills.

3. Can you do what is needed?

If the job involves public speaking or answering the telephone for example, your voice may be too faint or hesitant to be heard.

4. Do you really want the job?

Once it is explained in more detail, it may turn out you would not be happy in the job at all, or had the wrong idea about what is involved.

5. Do your capabilities or experience match what you put in your application?

An interviewer soon picks out people who have exaggerated or lied about their skills or knowledge.

6. Can they give you what you want?

You may ask about career prospects, travel, training or other factors that you want from the job.

Recently been for an interview? How did it go? Share your views in the comments below.

When mastering public speaking this question often arises:
“When do I allow questions?”

“When do I allow questions?”

Different public speakers allow questions at different parts of the presentation; but although there is no right or wrong way, the majority of speakers take questions only at the end. When mastering public speaking, you’ll want to decide the best time.

If we allow questions to be asked of us as and when they arise, it certainly aids informality – and this may be desirable if we are unsure of the level of knowledge of our audience.

However, unless controlled carefully, we could find the subject veering off at a tangent and all our careful preparation in danger of flying out the window as we follow a path for which we had not planned.

Another method is to allow questions at the end of fixed sections of the presentation. For complex topics this could again be beneficial so that everyone has a chance to catch up before moving on to the next section.

If, however, our audience is large, or it is a formal occasion, we are likely to have little choice but to keep all questions to the end. It is certainly easier to control the flow of the overall talk and it is so commonplace that most people feel comfortable with holding their questions back to the end. It also means we are better able to control the timing and flow of our speech and to keep ourselves on the straight and narrow.

In general, formal presentations will generate formal Q&As while informal sessions could encourage informal debate among a whole group of the audience.

The most important thing about the Q&A session, when held at the end though is that it will be the last thing that our audience remembers about our entire performance. If we gave a brilliant presentation, but stumbled over the answers at the end, the audience is likely to go away less than impressed.

On the other hand, if we gave a mediocre performance in the speech itself, but shone like a star in the Q&As, it may be enough to save our reputation and allow us to leave with our head held high!

For this reason, many people choose to hold their Q&A sessions just before the end. The difference is a fine one; and the thinking goes along the following lines: what happens if the Q&As go badly, or if the audience turns hostile?

Remember that the lasting memory of our audience as often as not will be how we ended our presentation. So some people hold the Q&A session just before the end, when they have said what they wanted to say, but before their killer close. This way, if the Q&As go badly, they still have a chance to pick up the pieces and end their presentation with a bang.

It’s up to you which you prefer to do; but when mastering public speaking – think about it carefully, as if you are at all worried about your audience reaction, it could spell the difference between success and failure.

Welcome to the Great Management Shop

A lot of people ask me what products and resources have I used during my career and which ones I would recommend.

If you were to search for ‘Self Development Products’ on the Internet, you will get back 15 million sites and every single one will tell you their product is the best!

The one’s I list here are the ones I have personally used and recommend.

I use these products to grow myself.

But I must mention two more points:

Just because I recommend a product or service, DOES NOT mean I endorse or recommend EVERYTHING the author, product developer or consultant does.

I earn money on some of these recommended resources. If you decide to "click through" and purchase some of the products… I’ll make a few bucks here and there.

But, that is NOT my reason for recommending them. Like I said before, I personally use the resources I recommend to develop and grow myself.

If you choose to use any of my recommendations I know I am putting you in safe hands.

On the contrary, it should make you work twice as hard, now that your responsibilities have expanded and your role has shifted. If you want to succeed and excel as a Manager, there are certain qualities you should develop. Here’s how to start:

Focus on your strengths

Why try to be a pilot if you’re a better engineer? Find out what you’re good at and build on it. You are much more likely to excel as a Manager if you know what it is you can do and accept what you can’t. You can always try to improve on your weaknesses, but you have better chances at success if you fine-tune your strengths instead.

Delegate

If you have no time to spare in developing your areas of weakness, turn to your team instead. If you must excel as a Manager, learn to delegate. No matter how hard you try, you simply can’t do what is physically impossible. Explore the specific competencies of your members and develop a plan to use them to your team’s advantage.

Learn from your mistakes

There is no single Manager in the world who is without fault. Whether we’re talking about CEOs, presidents, prime ministers, church or community Managers, all of them have made mistakes in their lives. The only difference is that they treated their mistakes as opportunities for learning.

Refuse mediocrity

If you want to excel as a Manager, you must always aim for excellence. Compromising on second best when you can insist (and actually obtain) the best will show that your standards are easy to reach without a lot of effort and that your team doesn’t have to work too hard.

Be consistent

Don’t renege on your promise or turn your back against a policy as if nothing happened. Avoid double standards and be fair. If, for any reason, you feel you must make a 360-turn, be ready with a plausible explanation.

Practice good people skills

You can only excel as a Manager if people are willing to follow you. You must be able to inspire and motivate your team. Develop your communication skills and maintain communication lines. If you are seen as a team player, your team will be more willing to discuss ideas with you openly.

Learn, learn and then learn some more

You should never stop learning. Consider opportunities to expand your Management role and find ways you can develop further. Learn new techniques in problem solving or consider new ideas or take lessons to improve your technical proficiency. By building your personal competence, you are much more able to cement your value as an excellent and competent Manager.

What ways would you add to excel as a Manager?
