mastering public speaking question timeWhen mastering public speaking this question often arises:

“When do I allow questions?”

Different public speakers allow questions at different parts of the presentation; but although there is no right or wrong way, the majority of speakers take questions only at the end. When mastering public speaking, you’ll want to decide the best time.

If we allow questions to be asked of us as and when they arise, it certainly aids informality – and this may be desirable if we are unsure of the level of knowledge of our audience.

mastering public speaking

Whatever your reasons for wanting to overcome your public speaking fears; shyness, a speech at a wedding or family event, or for business/ career purposes reasons you can do it.

Firstly you’ve committed yourself to learning more, you’ve stepped past the wishful thinking stage – which is further than the majority of people get.

Congratulations on taking this small, yet very significant, step to learning to speak with confidence.

mastering public speakingMany of us would love to start mastering public speaking.

One particular technique that works wonders in any public speaking engagement is to involve the audience.

Think of when we converse with a friend.

Unless we are extremely self-centred, the chances are that we don’t just talk and leave all the listening to the other person. We ask questions, we seek verbal as well as visual confirmation, we pause and we use rhetorical questions to improve the communication process.

And so it is with our public speaking.

mastering public speakingTo use the voice to best effect in a presentation involves us having to put a great deal of effort into the way we manipulate it. So how do you best use your voice?

1. Adding some confidence. If our audience doesn’t believe in us, then why will they bother giving us the time of day, let alone sit through our presentation?

2. Conviction in what we are saying is also key. Putting across our passion, despite the fact that we are genuinely convinced in our own argument, can cause our audience to doubt us and put question marks over what we have to say.

public speaking confidenceThe big day has arrived and you need some public speaking confidence. You have been introduced to the audience and the topic of your speech has been announced. From this point on, you are the main focus of attention. You are on your own and all eyes are on you!

This is where you start your performance. It’s not just a question of getting into your speech as quickly as possible, but mentally preparing both yourself, and the audience too, for what you are about to impart.

A sense of the dramatic is called for.
