5 Gold tips to boost your Motivation

Note: This is a guest post by FruitfulTime.

Everyone has goals in life but not everyone has the same motivation to reach them. Motivation is the one and only differentiator between normal people, successful people and extremely successful people. It is easy to set promising targets, but as time passes by, it is common that you will lose hope and stop dreaming that one day you can reach your initial goal(s). That happens because you do not inject the daily dose of motivation in your veins. Such dose will help you to keep on working even though sometimes the road seems long and the light at the end of tunnel is far away. The following are 5 tips to motivate yourself in order to keep focused on your goals.

1. Keep track of progress

Whatever you are doing, being it saving money, working on writing a book or building muscle, find a metric on how you can measure your success. Make sure that your metric is rigorous and not subject to interpretation. Finding a proper metric can be sometimes challenging such as measuring overall muscle weight. Before you start working, take an initial measure and keep track of it. Write down the target measure and the date by when that measure should be reached.

Break the time between the start date and the end date into smaller chunks and associate with them a particular measure. Hence the time between the start date and the end date will be a series of mini deadlines that will eventually drive you to your final destination, the final goal. Using such deadlines you can see whether you are keeping up the right pace or not. If you are keeping the right pace then all you have to do is keep on applying the same technique to reach your goals. If you are slowing down, you have to either intensify your efforts or else you have to change the way how you are tackling your goals.

2. Start small become bigger

When setting an ambitious target, you are tempted to do your maximum effort at once to reach your goals as soon as possible. No! Don’t do that. Doing so will suck up your energies at one go, making you unable to keep on working towards your goal. You should start small and intensify as you go along. This way you can always challenge yourself to work harder. Challenging yourself is one of the best motivation tips.

Also when you work your way slowly, you will have a chance of experimenting with different ways how to achieve your goals. You can spend a period of time experimenting with a particular technique and see if it pays back. If you don’t see any results at all you will have an option to do a u-turn and start using another technique. On the other hand if you see promising results, you can further intensify your efforts hoping that your technique scale up to the next stage.

3. Find a buddy

Find a partner who is working to achieve the same goals. For instance, I never go to gym alone. I always go with a friend of mine. It is much easier to wake early in the morning when you are committed with a friend to meet up at the gym. When I used to go alone, I always used to find excuses why I should not wake up and train.

Having a partner to encourage you is an extra boost. While working to achieve your goal (in this case train), you can easily compare the progress of your partner with your progress. It will become very apparent whether you are doing well or not. In case you are falling behind, try to consult your partner for tips on how s/he is managing to achieve more than you. Be very choosy when selecting a partner. Make sure you select a partner that has the same goals as you. Do not select a partner that has way too high goals or less ambitious goals than yours. Also make sure that the partner that you team up with is not a pessimist. Such people will discourage you and not motivate you to work harder towards your goals.

4. Start today

Don’t delay your starting any longer. If you know what you want to achieve and you clearly know the techniques how to achieve that goal, simply get yourself started today. You sometimes find yourself procrastinating on your goals, wasting precious time and killing your own motivation. Try to start working towards achieving your goals while you are motivated by the end result. Such motivation will give you a good push to start.

5. Celebrate what you achieved

The more you achieve the higher the probability that you will achieve more. It works like that. First achievements are the hardest. Once you get the feel of how to achieve certain goals, it will be easier for you to work your way towards the next goal. Use achievement to motivate yourself! When you get good results, you have lost weight, you got a high mark in your tests or you managed to attract a good business opportunity, make sure you will spend sometime to celebrate and reward yourself for the achievement. Make sure you share this with your friends so that you can celebrate with them your latest achievement.

No, the time you spend celebrating your achievements is not a waste of time! It is as important as working. Such time will help you be proud of yourself and significantly boosts your motivation. Do it for every achievement!

'Find a Buddy'

Lovely idea. So many people think they have to hide goals (in case they fail). I think we should all share our goals - it helps us focus.

Hey Gill,

I guarantee that once you do it once you will never stop from doing it. Sharing my goals makes me feel secure that I am not missing anything and makes me work hard!

Just a small note. Be aware with whom you share you goals. Some people might use the information your share with them against you ;)

Good luck! :)

Lloyd,

Thanks for commenting. In order to help you decide what you want, I would suggest you look at your passions and determine some outcomes. You might want a house by the sea and in order to get that you may have to boost you income by an extra $10k per year and you might be able to do that by painting pictures or something like that - depends upon your passion. Think about outcomes - this post may help - http://www.greatmanagemen t.org/blogs/75/What-I-lea rnt-From-One-Of-The-UKas- Best-Selling-Business-Aut hors.html
