    Encouragement

"How do you know if a man needs encouragement? If he is breathing." -Truett Cathy, Founder, Chick-Fil-A

    Raising Children

Her name is “Promise.” One lovely Sunday afternoon 14 years ago Alexandra Nicole Ziglar made her entrance into this world. Her parents and grandparents were all elated and relieved, since she was beautiful and completely healthy.

    Take A Second Chance

World War II proved to be a turning point in Chanel’s career. Despite being wildly successful, Chanel decided to close up shop in 1939, when France declared war on Germany. She closed the doors of her stores and stopped designing altogether. While other couturiers were leaving the country, Chanel decided to remain in her beloved Ritz Paris apartment. It was here where she would live out the controversy that was soon to surround her life.

    Leave A Strong Impression

“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress,” said Chanel. “Dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” Chanel understood the importance of appearance to getting ahead in the business world. Looking her best wasn’t just a matter of wanting to feel feminine or being attractive for Chanel, it was also a way to gain respect.

    Be Inspired

“Fashion is not simply a matter of clothes,” said Chanel. “Fashion is in the air, born upon the wind. One intuits it. It is in the sky and on the road.” A passionate woman, Chanel found the inspiration for her designs in the simplicities of her everyday life. From the closets of her lovers to the time she spent outdoors on her frequent fly-fishing expeditions, Chanel never stopped seeking out ideas for new product lines.

    Be Bold

“In fashion, you know you have succeeded when there is an element of upset,” said Chanel.

    Be One Of A Kind

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different,” said Chanel. “People laughed at the way I dressed, but that was the secret of my success: I didn’t look like anyone.”

    Have a Message

Estee Lauder Inc. was not just about beauty products. Lauder wasn’t just creating skin creams to help get rid of wrinkles or perfumes to make you smell good; there was a deeper message to her products. And, it was a message that helped her successfully sell her products.

    Try Something New

“Don’t be afraid of the trial-and-error approach,” wrote Lauder in her 1985 autobiography as a piece of advice to would-be entrepreneurs. “Trust your instincts…create your own style.”

    Create the Illusion

Until 1985, what was known about Lauder’s life was limited largely to what she decided to reveal. She had created an image of herself as the Cosmetics Queen whose eternal youth, beauty and class could not risk being marred by the reality of her somewhat plain upbringing. In 1985, that all changed when Lauder learned of the soon-to-be published unauthorized story of her life and she was prompted to write her own biography. But, even with the release of Estee: A Success Story, little was in fact exposed to help break down the myth of the larger than life Lauder.

    Do It Yourself

“I love my product,” said Lauder. “I love to touch the creams, smell them, look at them, carry them with me. A person has to love her harvest if she’s to expect others to love it.” Because of Lauder’s love for her company, she took a very hands-on approach to its operations, getting her hands dirty in everything from production to marketing to sales. She understood the importance of hiring a good team, but her desire for perfection and quality drove her to want to control all aspects of her company, at least until it got too big for her to handle alone.

“If you have a goal, if you want to be successful, if you really want to do it and become another Estee Lauder, you’ve got to work hard, you’ve got to stick to it and you’ve got to believe in what you’re doing,” said Lauder.

Don’t Forget Where You Came From

“As busy as I am wherever I am, I try to get out and walk the streets,” says Gardner, “to remember how far I’ve come and appreciate every baby step of the way.”

Hold On – It’s Always A Bumpy Ride

When Gardner was once asked what advice he would give anyone who was thinking about starting up his or her own business, he replied, “Hunker down, strap in, and hold on. Hold on baby!”

“I just wanted to make a million dollars,” says Gardner. “But I couldn't sing and I couldn't play ball, so I said to my mother, ‘How am I going to make a million dollars?’ And she said to me, ‘Son, if you believe you can do it, you will.’” He couldn’t sing, he couldn’t play ball; he was also homeless and he was black – Gardner definitely had the odds stacked against him. However, he took his mother’s lesson to heart and was determined to succeed regardless.

“My first ambition in life was to be Miles Davis,” recalls Gardner. “I didn’t want to be a trumpet player, an artist or a jazz musician – I literally wanted to be Miles. My mom said to me, ‘Baby, you can’t be Miles. There ain’t but one, and he got that job.’ But I made a commitment at an early age that I wanted to be world class at something,”

Find Something That Gets You Excited

“You have to be committed, and you have to find something that you are passionate about,” says Gardner. “And forget about money. I’ve learned that money is the least significant aspect of wealth.”

    Go After What You Want

I think fantasies are for the birds, Klein once said. Anything I wanted to do, I did. If theres something I want, nothing stops me.

    Broaden Your Appeal

I want everyone I can get, says Klein. Jews, Catholics, gays straights, you name it! Klein has risen to the top of the fashion industry by creating products and advertising campaigns that appeal to the broadest cross-section of the population and herein lies part of his genius. By not limiting himself to a certain market and creating a wide range of product lines to accommodate all segments of society, Klein helped solidify his position at the top of the American fashion industry.

    Dont Be Afraid To Innovate

The name Calvin Klein has today become synonymous with innovation. He has made a career out of venturing into unknown territories and charting new waters. From his designs to his promotional techniques, Klein has created a reputation based on originality and creativity. It was only in thinking beyond what had already been done, in all of the worlds of fashion, advertising and marketing that Klein was able to generate such incredible success and be named Americas Best Designer in 1993.

    Become An Expert

Whether it was sewing lessons from his grandmother, shopping trips with his mother or an apprenticeship with the esteemed coat manufacturer Dan Millstein in the New York fashion district, Klein knew that if he was going to succeed in the fashion business, he was going to have to take advantage of every single learning opportunity that presented itself. Known for his dedication to his craft, Klein often sacrificed much of his personal live to improve his skills and increase his chances of succeeding professionally.

Push Your Ads To The Limits

Anything we do in advertising is controversial, says Klein. If its provocative and sensual and related to what were selling, I'm willing to take the chance. I have fun with the ads.

We're not in the hamburger business, said Kroc. We're in show business. Kroc understood that it was all in the message; the success of McDonalds was going to be based on how the company was perceived by the public. Thus, Kroc spent much time and effort developing an effective marketing plan.

Use Failure As A Catalyst for Success

Luck is a dividend of sweat, said Kroc. The more you sweat, the luckier you get. Despite all his hard work, Kroc was not always a lucky man. From his early days in starting up McDonalds to even after the chain was a well-established global presence, Kroc experienced his fair share of failures. He was not immune to disappointment; what set Kroc apart from his competitors, however, was how he learned from his failures and bounced back.

    Go Big or Go Home

If youre not a risk taker, you should get the hell out of business, Kroc once said. He didnt build a franchise empire with over 3,000 stores in just ten years by sitting back and repeating the same formula that had worked once over and over again. Instead, Kroc strove to constantly improve his company and retain his place at the forefront of the industry by taking advantage of new opportunities. Even when there was big risk involved, Kroc stared the gamble in the face and rolled the dice.

Youre Only As Good As The People You Hire

None of us is as good as all of us, Kroc would say. A strong proponent of teamwork, Kroc understood that his growing company could only continue its meteoric rise up if it had the support and the dedication of its workers behind it. In order to ensure staff loyalty and motivate his employees, Kroc did his best to guarantee that they were treated with respect and were able to operate on an equal playing field.

    Take Your Business Seriously

I believe in God, family, and McDonald's, said Kroc. And in the office, that order is reversed.

    Make It Count

Work is futile if we cannot utilize the experience we collect in one life in the next, said Ford.

    Work Together

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success, said Ford. If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.

    Be Efficient

We are never satisfied with the way that everything is done in any part of the organization, said Ford of his operations at Ford Motor Co. We always think it ought to be done better and that eventually it will be done better. Everything can always be done better than it is being done.
